What Your Apparel Says About You

04 February 2021 | + Silvia Kabaivanova

Our clothes say a lot about us. When you get all dressed up to go to a fancy place, you feel terrific. When you're sitting at home, you don't care about looking good. You only want to feel comfortable. But there's a different feeling that takes us over when you wear a suit versus wearing a pair of pajamas.  It also sends a signal to the other people in the room. Your clothes speak before you open your mouth, and there are some psychological effects that your wardrobe might influence in your daily life. There's a lot of deep thought that comes before buying a new shirt, and the main question is when you do it and what motivates you to do it. Click here to read more. For example, if you always buy clothes on a whim, right after an important decision in your life, that means that you're trying to distance yourself from the reaction. There's always a deeper meaning, and here are some of the things that your apparel might be signaling.

Judging people
Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us judge other people based on the clothes they're wearing. Most Western societies don't have a system to know who is rich and who isn't, and that's why humans want to make it up.
The types of clothes you wear usually mimic the place where you fit in. If you're from a high-status family, it's highly likely that you're going to invest in higher quality brands without paying attention to the price tag.

This kind of behavior is present in Hollywood, where many movies and series have running gags about brands that might be of a lower class. They think of cheap clothes as insults. You can go to ZeroFucks.com for more info. Plus, many people still think that they can judge someone by the shoes they wear. That can't be further from the truth.

Apparel

Does it have an effect on your thinking?

Let's say that you just ended a long relationship. You're going to feel sad and miserable for a long time. But, that's the same period when some of your friends will come over and tell you to dress nicely because you'll be going out. Putting on things that fit you well helps you to shift your thinking.

That's why the makeover shows we see on TV are so successful, and the people look radically changed. The change might feel insignificant to you, but for the person who looks better than before, the feeling is radically different.

That's why you should dress how you want to feel. If you want to feel wealthy, dress like it. The same thing is true if you want to feel sexy or powerful. Your character will mimic the clothes you're wearing.

What are some of the problems that can be fixed?
Every piece of your wardrobe should have a time and a place, but you mostly wear the same things over and over again. Invite a friend over and take a look at the things that feel most comfortable. If you have only neutral colors and you never wear accessories, you should try spicing up your style.
This might suggest that you feel as if you're stuck in a rut, and you don't want any attention directed toward you. Wearing vivid colors will trick your brain, and you will instantly feel better. On the other hand, if you always wear clothes that don't fit you, that might suggest that you see yourself different than what other people might perceive you.
That's true for people that wear apparel that's too big or too small. In essence, you're viewing your body as it used to be and not as the way it is at the moment. Call someone and go shopping. It might take some time to get used to clothes that fit, so take it one step at a time.

Additionally, if you're always covered in designer logos, then you probably want to send a signal to everyone that you're richer than you actually are. Smaller logos still do the trick, and you should try picking pieces that are more neutral and realize that people value your character more than the clothes you're wearing.
